Originally from Jamaica, Dr. Tanya Clarke a distinguished MBBS graduate of the University of the West Indies (UWI), celebrated for graduating top of her class with both the pre-clinical and clinical medals, and notably as the first woman and second person ever to graduate with distinction. Her academic achievements were highlighted as the Valedictorian at UWI’s 50th anniversary in 1998.
Her approach to patient care prioritizes preventive medicine and patient-centered strategies, focusing on compassionate, evidence-based treatment. She is passionate about empowering patients with comprehensive knowledge of their health conditions, promoting active and healthy lifestyles.
In education, she strives to inspire and cultivate the next generation of healthcare professionals by imparting deep knowledge, nurturing critical thinking skills, and instilling a lifelong passion for learning in my students, residents, and fellows. Her academic contributions include extensive research, publications, and presentations that keep her practice and teachings at the cutting edge of medical advancements.
Previously, she held several key positions at the University of Miami, including Phase 3 Lead for 4th-year medical students, Sub-Internship Director, and memberships on the Executive Curriculum and Dean’s Diversity Committees. She was also the inaugural local presenter for the Hospital Medicine Grand Rounds.Additionally, she was involved with the Deans Diversity Council and The Society of Black Physicians, focusing on the recruitment and retention of Black faculty through effective mentoring and support
She lives an active lifestyle herself, and has a passion for athletics and competition. This passion led her to serve as Medical Director for the Jamaican National Track & Field Team (Racers Track Club) for 12 years and render medical services to both the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) and the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association (JAAA). The athletes under her care (including Usain Bolt, Yohann Blake, Warren Weir, and many more) have not only won Olympic medals but currently hold World and Olympic records. She also trained at the Olympic headquarters in Lausanne Switzerland - pre-performance evaluation of athletes.
As the current president of the South Florida Chapter of the UWIMAA and the South Florida Caribbean Doctors Association, she continues to lead with a focus on humility and inclusivity, striving to enhance healthcare delivery and education.
